Surrogate Motherhood and Health Insurance
Sorting out your health insurance before you even think about becoming a surrogate mother is one of the most important things you can do. Even if your health insurance is all worked out you may find that a lot of insurance companies have now put an exclusion on surrogate motherhood. If you decide to be honest about it, and phone your Insurance company, you may find that whoever you were talking to have taken notes and typed into your insurance agreement is the word surrogacy. Many Insurance companies will not even consider insuring a surrogate mother. Plus, there are so many different parts of surrogacy that need to be paid for through health insurance.
The first thing that will need to be paid for is very often fertility treatment before the surrogate mother will even become pregnant. Very often now the surrogate mother will not get any health Insurance as she is thinking of becoming pregnant thus sustaining high medical charges. This is why we have the base fee. This is meant to cover all of the surrogate mothers out of pocket expenses, such as, if the surrogate mother does not have health insurance then the intended parents should pay for her to have insurance. Also, if her usual policy excludes surrogacy then they must pay for a different policy. If the surrogate mother has a health insurance policy that does not exclude surrogacy, then the intended parents do not need to pay her normal insurance payments. It is illegal for the surrogate mother to use medical aid for surrogacy, this is classed as fraud and can end in a prison sentence.
As a surrogate mother, you may not have the easiest of pregnancies, and because of this your health bill can rocket. If you have an agreement with the intended parents that they will pay all of the your bills, do not be surprised if you find out that your intended parents have found out that they quite simply do not have the funds to pay for everything on your bill. Whose name is on the bill, why, the surrogate mothers of course. Be careful.
One of the best things you can do is either go through an Agency for surrogacy, or if you want to go through it privately, maybe you are doing it for family or a friend, then speak to a lawyer. Before rather than after.
There are certain things that are not paid for out of the surrogate mothers health insurance and that the intended parents must pay for. These include any IVF treatment, medication included in IVF or any of the infertility testing in a surrogacy situation. These charges are to be paid for by the intended parents only and not by the surrogate mother or her health insurance.
Of course, the best possible solution to all Health Insurance worries for any surrogate mother would be to have health insurance sorted out long before you decide to become a surrogate mother.
